On June 19, 1992, the Hawaii Herald ran a special and expanded issue that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the formation of the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate) in June 1942.
Several authors contributed to the articles, including Lyn Crost, the World War II correspondent who had been hired by the Honolulu Star Bulletin to write about the soldiers from Hawaii fighting in Europe. Another contributor was the Hawaii Herald editor, Karleen Chinen, whose father was a member of the original 100th contingent who left Hawaii in 1942.
